Elks Most Valuable Student: What Judges Actually Score

The Elks National Foundation does not publish a scoring rubric for the Most Valuable Student scholarship. Its scholarship page says applicants are judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need, and gives no weights at all. The one document the Foundation has published with actual point values is a judge score sheet from the 2020 contest, written for the lodge and district judges who screen applications before the national stage. It is six contests old and it covers only that first stage, so treat it as the best available evidence of what local judges weigh, not as this year's national formula. With that caveat stated plainly, here is everything it says.

Who this actually fits

You are a current high school senior and a US citizen heading into a four-year undergraduate degree at an accredited US college.
You have stuck with a few activities for years and held positions in them. Extracurriculars are the largest single slice of the judged leadership score, and the instruction rewards length of involvement and leadership held.
You have real work hours behind you, including unpaid work in a family business or on a family farm, which this sheet counts explicitly where most applications ignore it.
Your community service is service you chose. Hours your school required for graduation get subtracted.

Who should skip it

You have already graduated high school. The Foundation states graduates are not eligible, and nothing in the essay changes that.
You are not a US citizen.
You want a fast application. This is scored across three years of activities, service, work, honors, and an essay, so a thin record scores thin no matter how well it is written.

This is about the sponsor's stated requirements, not your odds. Nobody can tell you whether you will win.

What the Foundation itself says

The only scoring sheet they published, and what it actually covers

The document is titled 2020 Most Valuable Student Contest Lodge Judge Score Sheet, and it states it is for lodges and districts that judge applications. It describes the screening stage, not how the national committee selects the top 20. elks.org
At that stage a judged application can receive a total score of up to 1000 points: Academics 450, Leadership 450, and Financial Need 100. elks.org
Academics and Financial Need are objective scores supplied to the judges by ISTS, the contest administrator, totalling up to 550 points. The 450-point Leadership score is the only part Elks judges assign themselves, and it is averaged across all committee members. elks.org

What the 450 leadership points are made of

The leadership score breaks into Extracurricular Activities 125, Community Service 100, Essay 100, Honors and Awards 50, Employment 50, and up to 25 optional Stand Out points. elks.org
Extracurricular activities are the single largest slice, and the sheet tells judges to score them on the activities listed, how long the applicant was involved in each, and any leadership positions held. Depth over several years is what the instruction describes, not a long list. elks.org
Community service is scored on roughly three years of hours, minus the service hours that some high schools require for graduation. Hours you had to do to graduate are explicitly deducted. elks.org
The 50-point employment category counts time spent working on a family farm or in a family business even if the applicant was not paid. elks.org
For honors and awards the sheet offers examples of what is generally considered significant, including Eagle Scout, Girl Scout Gold Award, Boys or Girls State and HOBY, National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar, and major academic or athletic awards. What the essay score rewards

The essay carries 100 of the 450 leadership points and is scored on mechanics, style, and content. The sheet asks for writing that is clear, well organized, and sustains a well-focused discussion. elks.org
The sheet tells judges the essay should let them get to know the applicant, and that the writer should explore ideas with insightful reasoning, persuasive examples, a mature outlook, and a deep concern for society. It then asks judges directly whether the applicant would make them proud to call them an Elks scholar. elks.org

We could not verify these against a real source, so we are not going to guess at them.

Whether the 2020 weights still apply. The Foundation has not published a newer scoring sheet, and its current scholarship page lists no weights at all.
How the national committee chooses the top 20 from the finalists. No public Elks document describes that stage.
How the objective Academic and Financial Need scores are calculated. The sheet says both arrive from ISTS but never explains the formula behind either.
Whether your particular lodge judges applications at all. The sheet is addressed to lodges and districts that judge, which implies not all of them do.
